5. Reflect upon your answer from #1 in the pre-service reflection regarding your fears, concerns, expectations and perceived challenges that you wrote about. How were your initial thoughts confirmed or denied? Address any biases or stereotypes that you discovered that you had. Working with the students at the Be a Leader Foundation this semester, I realized that many while many of my fears were correct, I discovered a bias I did not even know I had. Going into the Be a Leader Foundation, I was afraid that I would not able to relate to the student because they are going through more difficult situations in their lives. One example of this was a young 7th grader that I worked with. She had big dreams of becoming a chef, but because none†¦show more content†¦This work is very beneficial to the students, I teach how to improve their music and marching technique skills, while also helping raise money for their future endeavors. I also continually work with Feed My Starving Chi ldren, an organization whose mission is to provide children in need with high quality, filling meals. I go to the center often, to pack meals that get sent to various countries around the world. I thoroughly enjoy this work, it makes me feel like I am making a difference to kids who do not always have access to sustainable meals. Volunteering at these two organizations makes me feel like I am becoming more civically engaged in my community. B. What can you do to be a civically engaged educator or teacher? As a teacher, I will be more civically engaged by not only continue my involvement in the community, but also by teaching my students to become more involved through service learning lessons. Service learning can be an important tool as an educator because the students can learn the academic content while also participating in a service project of their own.
